Susan Black, M.D., Pres., Brunswick Coastal Rotary
Helping Pregnant Women in Burundi

Susan will be speaking to the club about her club’s work with Village Health Works in Kigutu, Burundi. Susan’s club partners there with the Bujumbura Rotary Club.

Together, they successfully installed a fresh water system for the village, reducing the infant death rate from 4/week from unsafe water to none.

Burundi is the poorest country in the world. The death rate for pregnant women is 1 in 33.  The Rotary clubs are hoping to reduce that rate, just as they successfully reduced the infant death rate. Susan and her club are passionate (and it is self-evident) that women should not die because they need c-sections.

Brunswick Coastal is fundraising for an ambulance to bring pregnant women in need of c-sections (and other surgeries) from the catchment area on an off-road journey to a new women’s hospital expected to open later this year.

They also have two surgeons training in another country who will be able to perform the c-sections and other surgeries.
