Cape Family Fun Day fried dough booth profit was over $900.

The club had raised over $29,000 for Polio Plus. This was $4,000 over our club goal and nearly $15,000 over the amount alloted by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

District Governor Ronald Drouin from the Rotary Club of Biddeford - Saco visited on July 27.

Doug Stewart became a multi donor Paul Harris Fellow.

Bill York became a Paul Harris Fellow which was presented by his wife Diane.

On August 24, we held our annual lobster and steamed clam cook out at Fort Williams. Over 40 members and guests were present. Gale force winds of 40 knots failed to dampen our spirit. 

1st District Congressman, Joseph Brennan, spoke to the club on August 31.

Members installed a scoreboard at Family Field.

 

On September 10, the Rotary Club of South Portland - Maine Mall held its Charter Night at the Merry Manor in South Portland.

Three former members of our club, Dennis King the new President, Dave Chadwick is the new Treasurer, and Larry Carey, became charter members of the new club.

The City of South Portland received a commitment of $13,000 for the restoration of Bug Light.

Our club sponsored a theatre party for "Marne" at the Phyllis Schyler Thaxter Theatre. Our profit was over $3,000.

The Maine Public Relations Council named Dan L. Davidson the 1988 recipient of the Edward L. Bernays Golden Arrow Award for outstanding contributions to the public relations profession.

Judy, wife of Jim Rowe and May, wife of Allen Rowe were made Paul Harris Fellows.

Our club passed the 11,000% plateau of giving to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

Fifty senior citizens were our guests at the annual Christmas Party held on December 14. The Lyric Theatre provided the musical entertainment.

On Friday, December 2, our club provided hot chocolate at the Mill Creek tree lighting.

Christmas Tree Sale profit was $17,500.

Our speaker on December 28 was Vincent McKusick, Chief Justice of the Maine Supreme Court, who spoke on his recent trip to Russia and its legal system.

Sons and Daughters night was enjoyed on January 25 with Ray Logan a magician for entertainment.

Carroll Beck, a member of our club for 15 years, passed away on February 3.

District Governor Ron Drouin has challenged each club to have 10% of its members visit two clubs 100 miles away. We met the challenge by visiting the Rotary Club of Wellesley and the Rotary Club of Weston both in Massachusetts.

Spouses Night was observed on February 15, and after the dinner the group adjourned to Mahoney Middle School for a performance by the South Portland High School Drama Club. This was a special performance in appreciation of the $2,000 of theater lights that we purchased. The play, a comedy, was entitled "The Worst High School Play Ever Written." President Doug got his photograph in the ROTARIAN magazine presenting the theatre lights.

$1,000 was donated to the South Portland Drug Awareness Education program.

$2,000 was donated to the Cape Elizabeth Drama Department for video equipment.

A joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Scarborough was held at the Dunstan School Restaurant on Tuesday, April 25. This was the culmination of an attendance contest with the two clubs competing for a $100 prize to the winners favorite charity. The Rotary Club of South Portland - Cape Elizabeth was the winner, in fact we led the District during February with a 94.33% attendance record.

On May 3 the club moved from Purpoodock Club to the Snow Squall Restaurant. The major reason for the change was the noise during our meeting. The cost of the meal was $12. 

 

District 779 was to become two districts in June 1990. The district was adding many new clubs and was going to be over 70 very soon.

Dan Mooers was nominated to become the Charter District Governor of the new District 778 in when the new district came in to being on July 1, 1990.

Past District Governor Sam Giftos was invited to be a moderator of a group discussion at the Rotary International Conference in Seoul, Korea.

The club served coffee and doughnuts at the Cape Fort Williams Park Clean-up Day on May 20. Profit was $12.

 

The Cape Family Fun Day fried dough booth again made a net profit of approximatly $1,000

 $1,000 scholarships were awarded to Clifford Gallant and Andrew Gilmore of South Portland and Jessica Gorham and Lisa Liberty of Cape Elizabeth.

Again we held a pancake breakfast for graduating Cape Elizabeth High School seniors on June 17.

Bill Lewis a former member and vice president of our club was made a Paul Harris Fellow by the club.

Our total contributions for the year were over $26,000.
