Andy Longley, District Governor, from the Rotary Club of Newburyport, Massachusetts visited our club on August 4. This was a ladies' night Two Lights State Park. Warren Simpson was made a Paul Harris Fellow.

Senator George Mitchell spoke to the club on August 25.

The Reading Academy of the University of Southern Maine which is working with illiterate adults in the greater Portland area lost all of its Federal Funding. Jim Ferguson, of our club, succeeded in starting the program again with a joint venture of the Rotary Clubs of Westbrook, Portland, Scarborough, and our club. We donated $3,000 to the project.

We donated $1,500 to provide Christmas Lights in Mill Creek Park.

Ray Frost, who helped found our club and the Rotary Club of Kennebunk - Wells died in November. He would have been 90 on November 15. He was a Rotarian for 47 years with 37 years of perfect attendance. He was club President, Secretary, District Secretary, and our first Paul Harris Fellow. Known as "Mr. Rotary" he will always be remembered for his lusty leading of "I've been working on the Railroad".

The Annual Senior Citizen Christmas Party was held on December 15, with entertainment by the Lyric Theater. 

The Christmas Tree sale made a profit of $7, 146.

Edward H. Theriault, a member of our club since 1970 who had 12 years of perfect attendance died in May. 

 

A special scholarship to a Cape Elizabeth graduate was be given in the name of Joan Benoit. Joan had put Cape Elizabeth and Maine on the map with her long distance running. The scholarship will be $1,000.

$2,500 was approved to expand the Christmas Tree Lights in Mill Creek Park.

The District Conference was held at The Balsams and Sam Giftos was nominated to serve as District Governor during 1985 - 1986.
