Catherine is looking for a few good gardeners to help with maintaining the gardens at Bug Light. The project will meet every other week on Tuesday morning from 8 am to 9 am at Bug Light to work on the garden. If you can help out please go to the volunteer signup and indicate the weeks you can do it.

Catherine is also looking for someone to volunteer to lead another small team to do the same for the garden area next to the picnic shelter at Fort Williams. You can either email Catherine or go to the volunteer list and sign up, it's the last item on that list.

The official Veterans Administration list of needs for homeless veterans who are moving into permanent OR transition housing is here

The complete list makes up one "kit" ... but our effort is just to get as many of each item as possible to donate. The VA will put the items into kits, or provide them singly as needed.

This is just one of many ways in which our Club is helping Maine's homeless vets. And this is an ongoing effort so your help at any time will really be appreciated.

The items below, per VA regulations, MUST BE NEW ITEMS, not used.

We nowadays take for granted that Rotary is a well-respected and trusted partner of UNICEF and the CDC in its efforts to eradicate polio. And that level of trust is so high that as John LoBosco pointed out 2 weeks ago, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has chosen to partner with our Rotary Foundation. But 30 years ago public health leaders were very skeptical of both the feasibility of Rotary’s plans to wipe out polio in a country by country campaign, but also of its ability to bring real money to the table.

From Doing Good in the World, the Inspiring Story of the Rotary Foundation’s First 100 Years by David C. Forward

More than 16,000 Rotarians from every continent jammed into the Philadelphia Convention Center on May 24, 1988. While they enjoyed the entertainment and workshops and inspiring speakers, every single attendee had one question on his or her mind: “Did we make it?”

Time magazine has a nice article about the possibility of 2018 being the end - of Polio.

The end of new Polio cases may occur this year. Rotary has been on the frontlines of the effort to eliminate polio since 1979. In 2016 there were 70 cases, in 2017 only 16, and we hope in 2018 zero.

Our speaker this week [August 26] was John Lamb, Director of Communications & Government Relations for the Maine Region of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross responds to about 300 fires each year in Maine. They would like to see that number go down so they are adding an emphasis on fire prevention. John spoke about the importance of maintaining smoke alarms, having a planned escape route and practicing it, having a predetermined meeting place, and having a “Go Bag” by the door packed with items you may need if you have to leave a burning home (shoes, jacket, information about prescriptions, flashlight, etc.). The Red Cross has been conducting canvasses in which they go door to door, talk to residents about fire safety and even install smoke alarms. They are scheduled to do a canvassing in South Portland on November 7. If you have any interest in volunteering to participate in the canvas, please contact John (523-5124 or John.Lamb@redcross.org).

Saturday August 16 was Bug light Festival and the lighthouse was opened for tours. It was a gorgeous day to be in the park, and had about 224 people tour the lighthouse, roughly half of them were children.  The morning shift saw Tony and Sue telling guests about the lighthouse at the top level, Chuck commenting on the mid level, Scott, Nancy and Sally at the entrance. Everyone had a good time, both Rotarians and guests. At noon the staff turned over with Laurenz taking the top level, Bill in the middle and Kathy managing the line.

Bob Carson and Paul Butler – combined they served more than 31 years as secretary for the South Portland/Cape Elizabeth Rotary Club. In most cases, a club officer might serve a year or two in an officer’s position. These two men served long “beyond the call of duty” and exemplify the Rotary motto of “Service Above Self.”

Why did they dedicate themselves to the job for so long?
