Photography as a Bridge Between Worlds
Matilde Simas is an Azorean documentary photographer and advocate whose work confronts human rights violations through an artistic lens rooted in empathy, ethics, and collaboration. Her practice centers on gender-based violence, human trafficking, and the lived experiences of marginalized communities. Through powerful imagery and trauma-informed storytelling, she amplifies survivor voices and brings attention to global issues often rendered invisible. Her photography has supported world-wide awareness campaigns, policy discussions, and grassroots efforts.
In her role as business person, Mattie is Founder and Executive Director of Capture Humanity. Capture Humanity crafts ethical storytelling content for academic research and NGOs around the world.She has worked with partners in Kenya, Indonesia, Tanzania, Uganda, Phiippines, and the US. Prior to founding Capture Humanity, Mattie founded Limb Kind Foundation and served as Creative Director and Lead Photographer. Prior to that, Mattie opened and ran a portrait studio in the Greater Boston area for almost 14 years.
Mattie received her Bachelor of Science degree at Suffolk University and subsequently attended Rhode Island School of Design, Harvard Extension School (twice) and Berkeley College.
