Weekly meals at the Purpoodock Club were now $8.

 

District Governor Joe Hahn visited the club on July 30 the meeting was held at the Sheraton Inn, South Portland. Joe is a member of the Rotary Club of Brunswick, Maine.

The club honored Bill Kourakos by making him a Paul Harris Fellow.

The club made a $2,500 donation to the Cerebral Palsy Center. 

Rotary International President M.A. T. Caparas was honored at a well attended lobster and clam bake at the Shawmut Inn in Kennebunkport on August 4.

Our softball team defeated the Rotary Club of Scarborough 15-8. 

 

We have donated $ l, 250 to the Samantha Smith Foundation and have challenged other Rotary Clubs in the District to match our donation.

The Rotary Club of Biddeford-Saco handed our softball team its first defeat 15-5.

A father-son-daughter night was held at the Bridgeway Restaurant. Magician Ralph Greenwood was the entertainment on October l.

The city of South Portland gave the club an award for assisting with the development of the Knightville Project.

Governor Joseph E. Brennan spoke to the club on October 8. 

Ladies' Night was held on October 29 with excerpts from the Portland Players production "Best Little Whorehouse in Texas."

Dan Davidson has written several letters to The Rotarian magazine on the subject of "Women in Rotary."

A new Rotary sign was erected on Waterman Drive. In one year we hove gone from 2,200% to our current plateau of 4,200% which is the highest level for the Rotary Foundation in District 779. We are the leading club with giving at $215.62 per capita.

On Saturday, November 22, Tony Wagner and Sally Campbell were married. 

 

The tree lighting ceremony in Mill Creek Park was held on December 5 and our club distributed coffee and hot chocolate.

Larry Carey resigned from the club for a few months. He was replaced on the board of directors by Doug Stewart. 

Forty-two senior citizens attended the annual Christmas Party on December l 0 with musical entertainment from the Lyric Theatre. 

175 Rotarians from across Maine gathered at the Sheraton Inn, South Portland to award a Paul Harris Fellow posthumously to Samantha Smith. It was accepted on her behalf by her mother, Jane Smith.

A new marquee was donated to the Portland Players at the Phyllis Schyler Thaxter Theatre.

Profit from our Christmas Tree Sale was $17,000. 

 

The Cape Middle School gym has been secured for basketball for our members on Thursday nights.

Dan Mooers became a multi-donor Paul Harris Fellow. Doug Stewart became a Paul Harris Fellow by a donation from his wife, Pamela.

Club members have constructed a grandstand at Family Field in Cape Elizabeth.

On Saturday, May 8, Doug Stewart organized a Mother's Day breakfast for Rotary families which was held at the Cape Elizabeth Methodist Church.

By a unanimous vote, the Board of Directors has voted to remain at the Purpoodock Club. Four other restaurants were considered.

Seventy-six members and wives attended the 25th Anniversary Celebration of our club at the Sheraton Inn, South Portland. The charter members who were not Paul Harris Fellows became Paul Harris Fellows that night. Dick Yerxa, Bill Kilroy, Dick Jordan, and Dan Gacetta joined the growing list of Paul Harris Fellows.
